The Ava Cowl crochet pattern has been a long time coming. I initially posted a picture of my first Ava Cowl on Instagram in the Fall of 2018. I liked the aesthetic of the cowl however, I just wasn’t happy with it. So I tweaked it and tweaked it. Then, to be honest, I would put it down for a while because I would get distracted and move on to one of my other works in progress. But, thanks to the many people that loved it and messaged me asking me for the pattern, I perservered rather than letting this design disappear into my wip pile.

My initial plan was to use up some of the Bernat Pop that I had in my stash but also to create a pattern that could be done utilizing only one skein of Bernat Pop. Everytime I tweaked something I would end up with too much yarn left over and when I say I want to use one skein, I mean that I want to use as much of that skein as I can and waste as little as possible. If you stick to the gauge, you’ll be able to use the full skein with very little waste – maybe 2 to 3 feet of yarn remaining.

If you’re not wanting to use Bernat Pop, this pattern can be done in your favourite comparable worsted weight yarn as long as you’re meeting gauge. I’ve made this cowl in Blue Chambray and Ebony and Ivory colourways and both turned out amazing. The Ebony and Ivory cowl was a big hit and is actually what inspired my Polar Puff Messy Bun Hat Pattern

This is an unsponsored post and the thoughts/opinions are all my own.

I was going through my Christmas gift planner (get your free copy here) the other day and had this moment of panic when I looked at how much I had planned to make this year.  Rather than get totally stressed out and throw myself a pity party, I pulled myself together and started making an action plan.  My goal was to create something quick and easy.  I wanted it to be so easy that even an absolute beginner should be able to pump out dozens of these by the holidays.  Nothing works up quicker than chunky wool and a super-sized crochet hook.  With that in mind, I picked up one of the biggest crochet hooks I’ve got and some chunky wool and got to work.  Soon, the Super Quick Chunky Cowl Crochet Pattern was born.

Super Quick Chunky Cowl Free Crochet Pattern - Excellent beginner's crochet pattern that can be made up in approximately an hour. Makes a great last minute gift.

A few months ago, I made myself a cardigan using Bernat Beyond chunky yarn and I really enjoyed working with it.  I also ended up buying a TON of it when it went on sale.  When my husband saw me packing away 30 skeins of the stuff the day it was delivered, he just shook his head and walked away.  I’m pretty sure he said something about me being a nut bar, but I can live with that so I kept unpacking my new squishy yarn.

When I say this cowl works up super quick, I mean it.  I was able to get one done in an hour with two little kids running around like our house is some modern version of The Lord of the Flies.  So if I can do it, you can too.  If you are in a bind and need a last-minute gift, make this your new go-to.

Super Quick Chunky Cowl Free Crochet Pattern - Excellent beginner's crochet pattern that can be made up in approximately an hour. Makes a great last minute gift.

You’ll need a 15mm crochet hook, your favourite super bulky yarn (if you aren’t using Bernat Beyond) to complete this project and you’ll need to be be able to crochet the following stitches: single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch.  That’s it!  The giant hook gives this cowl a bit of a lacy look and the alternating rows give a very subtle diagonal striping.  So grab your hook and let’s make us a Super Quick Chunky Cowl!
